Do you really need to buy a super expensive jacket for skiing or snowboarding?
The high prices on the most technical ski and snowboard jackets are insane. You can easily spend $500 to $1000 or more for the latest Gore-Tex 3L (3-Layer) jacket with YKK waterproof zippers. While there is no doubt these high priced snow jackets are nice, we would argue that the vast majority of skiers and snowboarders do not need to spend that much money for their on-slope jacket.
There is definitely a need for a super technical jacket when you are an extreme outdoor enthusiast. If you are doing a lot of backcountry skiing or if you do multi-day backpacking trips in the winter, then a packable, breathable, high-end jacket is a necessity. If you are a die-hard resort skier/boarder that hits the slopes even on the worst weather days, then a super expensive jacket may be a nice piece to add to your on-slope kit. However, there are many types of skiers or riders who will never need to spend $500+ for their on-snow equipment.
That is exactly why we created an on-snow shell jacket for well under $100. This jacket will perform great on the slopes during sunny days as well as not-so-sunny days. It can take a beating if you take a slam here and there and it will keep you dry in light snow. Don't get me wrong, if you get caught in a major storm then there is no jacket under $100 that is going to keep you warm and dry, but an affordable jacket will get the job done 90% off the time.
