The Local Snow Report - Memorial Day Weekend
This is our last Mammoth Mountain snow report of the season. We are pretty lucky that the lifts are still open daily since temps have been in the 70's the last few weeks. It was a low snow year, but we have been skiing/riding since October and the official closing date is June 5, 2022. The Mammoth Yacth Club is happening this weekend with a costume contest, on-snow boat races, and plenty beer drinking I'm sure. Click this link for more details on the event.
If you are wondering what it is like to ski or snowboard at Mammoth Mountain on Memorial Day weekend, take a look at a few of these current photos. The "strip of death" is in full form on the way down to the bottom of chair 2 and while exiting chair 1. The upper mountain is still in pretty good condition, the best runs being cornice bowl and the back side of chair 3. The snow is pretty hard and icy when the mountain opens at 7:30, but it softens up super quick and gets pretty slushy, especially on the lower half of the mountain, by 9:30 am.
There are a couple pretty fun snake runs that are forming off the top of the mountain. Be careful once you drop in because they are actually pretty challenging. Be aware of dirt patches and rocks in places, mainly towards the bottom of the mountain. All in all, it's pretty fun to get out on the hill for a few hours and you'll still have the rest of the day to hike, bike, golf, or hit up one of the lakes. Bonus....the Lakes Basin is opening Friday, May 27 at 2pm, so you'll be able to get up to Lake Mary and Horseshoe lake this weekend.
The Mammoth Mountain Park is still hanging in there. There is a small set up towards the bottom of Broadway with 5 rails and mid-sized jump. You can still get you jib on and catch some air even though it is the end of May.
