What to expect from La Niña - Winter 2024-2025 Mammoth Lakes

As winter approaches, skiers and snowboarders are eagerly anticipating the upcoming season in Mammoth Lakes, California. This year's long-term forecast calls for a weak La Niña pattern. Typically, La Niña winters tend to bring cooler and wetter conditions to the Pacific Northwest, while leaving Southern and Central California drier than usual. For Mammoth Lakes, situated in the Eastern Sierra of Central California, the effects can be a bit unpredictable, with the potential for extended dry spells. However, the last time La Niña was part of the winter forecast, 2 winters ago, Mammoth broke the all time record for snowfall with over 700 inches.

All things considered, in our unprofessional opinion, we are probably looking at more of an average winter in terms of inches of snowfall by the end of the season. Based on how things went a few seasons ago, the potential for the occasional big dump is definitely there, but I wouldn't count on anything close to the record of 700 inches. While this forecast might sound concerning for powder hounds, it's important to remember that Mammoth Lakes has a reputation for defying expectations. The unique geography of the area, with its high elevation and proximity to both desert and ocean influences, can lead to surprising weather patterns. Even in years with less-than-ideal forecasts, Mammoth has been known to receive substantial snowfall, often outperforming other California resorts. With the average season coming in at around 350 inches, I would say we are still in for plenty of pow days and a decent snow season overall.

For those planning trips to Mammoth Lakes this winter, our advice is to stay flexible and keep your gear ready. Whether we're blessed with epic powder days or facing more challenging conditions, the Eastern Sierra always offers an adventure. At Faultline395, we're gearing up for whatever Mother Nature throws our way, ensuring to be prepared for any conditions on the mountain. Regardless of what the snow gods bring us in 2024/25, it is always a good time sliding around on however much white stuff covers the ground.
